{"id":2815,"date":"2021-06-03T12:55:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-03T12:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.schsl.org\/?p=2815"},"modified":"2021-06-24T13:02:49","modified_gmt":"2021-06-24T13:02:49","slug":"subway-honors-schsl-students-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.schsl.org\/wp57\/archives\/2815","title":{"rendered":"Subway Honors SCHSL Students Of The Year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>SUBWAY\u00ae\nRESTAURANTS AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO SCHSL STUDENTS OF THE YEAR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COLUMBIA, SC \u2013 The South\nCarolina High School League announced the winners of the Student of the Year\nawards presented by Subway\u00ae restaurants honoring one male and one female student\nwith individual $2,500 scholarships for their pursuit of higher education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Student of the Year award\nwinners were Leon Wang from Dreher High School in Columbia and Paulina Halus of\nWilson High School in Florence. Wang is captain of the Blue Devils wrestling\nteam as well as a member of the cross-country team. Wang boasts a 5.507 GPA is\nfirst in his class and will be attending MIT in the fall. Halus served as\ncaptain of the Tigers\u2019 girls soccer team and has a 5.507 GPA. She has received\nadmission to the United States Naval Academy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Wang and Halus have shown\ngreat leadership and support for their classmates throughout their academic\ncareers, exceedingly so during the pandemic. Halus coordinated an SAT\nPreparation Club during the pandemic, leading her peers in virtual preparation\nsessions for the SAT while they were out of school.&nbsp; Wang tutored his classmates as well as\ncollege students while also founding the Chemistry Club at Dreher High. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to thank Subway\u00ae for\ntheir support of this initiative, providing scholarship dollars for these\ndeserving student-athletes,\u201d said SCHSL Associate Commissioner Danny Brooks,\nwho oversees the Student of the Month program. \u201cThe overall accomplishments of\nour finalists was simply amazing and resulted in one of the most difficult\nselection processes in which I have taken part.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe could not be prouder of the\nstudent-athletes who worked so hard during such a challenging and unprecedented\nyear. It was an honor to present the Student Athlete of the Year awards as all\nthe candidates truly exude excellence not only in athletics, but in their\nacademics and service time as well. Congratulations to the winners as we\u2019re\npositive they will continue to do great things in their next chapter of life,\u201d\nsaid Gypsy Fisher, Chief Operating Officer of Subway Development Corporation of\nSouth Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Subway\u00ae franchisee\npartnership with the SCHSL includes sponsorship of the Student of the Month\naward, which recognized students who displayed excellence in academics,\nathletics, and community service.
